Police: Man who barricaded self in Johnson City motel charged with assault

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – A man who barricaded himself inside a room at a Johnson City motel Monday evening has been charged with assault.

According to JCPD Lt. Steve Sherfey, police responded to Volunteer Lodge, 2316 Browns Mill Road in Johnson City, around 3:30 p.m. on an assault call, where they found a man barricaded inside one of the rooms.

Officers attempted to go inside the room, but found the man — later identified as Brad Millsap — to be uncooperative.

According to Sherfey, Millsap would not talk to police on the phone inside the room, but did communicate with them through the door.

Sherfey said crews on-scene tear-gassed the room and then went inside the room where they were able to take Millsap into custody.

Millsap was then taken to Johnson City Medical Center for evaluation, which Sherfey said is a precaution once an individual is tear-gassed.

After he is released from JCMC, Millsap will be taken to Washington County Detention Center.

According to Sherfey, Millsap was charged with assault.

Police also shut down the eastbound exit ramp — Exit 20 — that runs directly behind the motel and connects to North Roan Street during the incident, but the ramp has since been reopened.

News Channel 11 crews who were at the scene said Johnson City Police Department, a K-9 unit, SWAT, Johnson City Fire Department and Washington County EMS all responded to the motel.
