HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – A Kingsport woman is dead after an argument via text messages. The heated exchange was between the 25-year-old woman and her 43-year-old aunt.
The sheriff’s office says, on October 1, deputies responded to a shooting on Carters Valley Road at lot 16 in Church Hill, TN. When deputies arrived they found Brittany Murray lying in the road directly in front of the home with a gunshot wound to her head.
Investigators say Murray arrived at the home of her aunt Beth Manis around 9:35 p.m.
Jon-Michael Cook, Murray’s fiancé, remembers the moment when his 25-year-old bride to be died on Saturday.
“It’s just hard to talk right now because it’s so fresh,” Cook said. “It’s hard to hold your loved one in your arms when they’re passing away.”
Deputies determined when Murray got out of a vehicle and started to approach the home, Manis allegedly stepped out on the porch and fired a shot from a .357 revolver striking Murray in the head.
“I heard that gunshot go off and I just saw through the car her go down and I ran around to her. She was already gone though,” Cook said.
According to the HCSO, several witnesses provided statements that Manis did not give any warning before the shooting.
Cook and Murray were planning a wedding and have a 3-month-old son. Cook said his fiancé will be missed.
“She was outgoing. Everybody loved her. She loved animals, she was about to start a job at Petsmart and she was excited, she was so excited about it,” he said.
Manis is charged with first-degree murder. She is being held without bond until her next court appearance, which is scheduled for October 17.
