Four arrested after assault rifles and other items stolen from Unicoi county home

UNICOI COUNTY(WJHL) – Four people have been arrested after several firearms including two assault rifles were stolen from a home in Unicoi County.

Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley says the owner of the home left Thursday morning and discovered the burglary around 12:30pm. Authorities tracked the suspects into the woods beside the home and found some of the stolen weapons covered in leaves.

Sheriff Hensley says deputies tracked the burglars to the home owners rental house. Other stolen items were found on the trail leading to the rental home.

After obtaining a search warrant for the rental home, the home owner identified a pistol that was stolen inside that rental property.

Unicoi County Sheriff deputies along with Erwin Police spotted the suspects vehicle and stopped it at the Roadrunner Market parking lot on Highway 81 South.

Two suspects were transported to Unicoi County Criminal Investigation Division.

The Investigation led deputies to a home on Spruce Street where officers observed two subjects inside the residence that had outstanding warrants on.

Sheriff Hensley says when officers entered the house to make the arrest, they observed items in plain view that were taken in the burglary. The other two suspects were taken into custody.

Robert Lee Gills Jr, Devon Guinn, Mercedes Winters, and Clinton Grindstaff have been charged with burglary and are currently being held in the Carter County Jail.

Deputies were able to recover all weapons and other items stolen from the burglary.
