Breaking: Carter County Sheriff’s office investigating death at Watauga Lake

CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – A woman is dead after an incident at Watauga Lake.

Sheriff Dexter Lunceford tells News Channel 11 that a car was found submerged in 15 feet of water near the Shook Branch swimming area at Watauga Lake just after 5pm Saturday.

Sgt. Larry Vaughn tells News Channel 11 the car landed around 300 feet into the lake.

“There’s no evidence to suggest there was any type of crash, it’s a single vehicle involved. It’s an ongoing investigation and we should know more as the night move on,” Sgt. Vaughn said.

The sheriff says a woman in her 60’s was the only occupant in the car and is deceased. Her identity is being withheld until next of kin is notified.
