NASHVILLE (WKRN) — A crash involving a tractor-trailer and gravel truck is blocking eastbound traffic on Interstate 40 near I-440.  Eastbound lanes are closed as crews work to clear the scene. It’s expected to reopen at 4 p.m. central time.

According to officials at the scene, a gravel truck toppled down an embankment and onto I-40 where it collided with a tractor-trailer.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Jason Perdue, was hauling tomatoes from California to Henderson, North Carolina.

“I’m just on my way to my delivery, cruising through ‘crashville’ I call it, I look up and it’s like a movie you’re watching. You see this truck just falling out of the air,” he said. “Right in my lane. I had nowhere to go. So I just locked it down and braced for impact.”

He said that on a crowded interstate, he had no other choice but to hit the truck.

“My first thought is to do everything I can to hold my truck in that lane because there’s traffic on either side of me. And that’s the last thing I’m gonna do, hit one of them and hurt them.”

He said he was thankful he wasn’t injured and could go home to his children.

“By the grace of the man upstairs, I’m here.”

It is unclear at this time if anyone was inside the gravel truck when it fell.
