FLEMINGSURG (WATE) – Days after her husband’s death, the wife of “real-life” “Fault in Our Stars” couple has passed away.
Katie Prager,26, died early Thursday morning, according to a Facebook post by her mother Debra Donovan. “One important thing I have taken away from this is to live, just live,” said Donovan. “If there is something you want to do, don’t wait. Life is short, love as hard as you can.”
Katie was in hospice in Flemingsburg, Kentucky at the the time her husband Dalton Prager,25, died at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after struggling with cystic fibrosis on Saturday.
Her mother, Debra Donovan, told CNN the couple FaceTime while Dalton was passing away. The last time Katie saw her husband in person was on their wedding anniversary, July 16.
“She told him that she loved him,” said Donovan to CNN. “We don’t know if he heard her.”
On Facebook, Katie wrote: “My angel, my best friend, the love of my life, my husband went to be with the Lord our God today. Dalton fought a long hard battle with cystic fibrosis.”
Dalton was in the ICU two weeks before passing away. The family told CNN that they were hoping to bring Dalton to Kentucky so he could be near his wife Katie.
The two were called the “real-life” “Fault in Our Stars” couple, because their lives were similar to the couples in the film and book.
The two met online when they were 18-years-old. Both had CF, however, Dalton also had a contagious infection. Katie’s doctors told her to not meet with other CF patients in order to not become sick, however, they two met anyway. They married when they were 25-years-old. Katie did develop the same infection as Dalton and both received transplants. Dalton latter developed cancer.
Katie started receiving hospice care after suffering complications after the transplant.
