SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – A Bristol, TN elementary school will be closed for a few days.
Sullivan County schools announced this morning, Weaver Elementary will be closed today (September 22) and Friday, September 23 “to perform structural work on the roof-line over the school’s library.
According to Director of Sullivan County schools Evelyn Rafalowski, a leak in the roof was reported earlier this week.
After some consultation, it was determined that work needed to be done on the building and it’s best not have anyone inside the building while work is completed, but only a few key personnel will be allowed on campus, according to Rafalowski.
In addition, Weaver Elementary said on its website,”…basketball and cheerleading sign-ups, as wells as any drop-offs for the fall festival, will be reschedule for next week.”
Officials hope the repairs may be completed by Sunday or early next week.
” We hope to have students back on a regular schedule beginning Monday, September 26,” said a message on the school’s website.
News Channel 11 is following this story. We’ll post the latest details as soon as they become available.
The following is a statement from Sullivan County schools director Evelyn Rafalowski:
“As a result of that evaluation, we felt we needed a more intensive evaluation. The roof-line in the area over the library has been evaluated today by a structural engineer and at this time, structural reinforcement of the roof framing is being recommended and during that time we feel it is in the best interest of everyone not to occupy the building. Our maintenance department will begin work in the morning and will work non-stop until this initial work is complete. Our earliest estimate and hope is that work will be completed Sunday and school will resume as soon as possible (early next week) after the work has been completed. Once the work is completed, the structural engineer will again evaluate the building ensuring the safety of the roof-line. Once this initial stage is complete, we will further perform some additional support work by adding several columns outside the building.
