Victim identified in fatal crash on 19-E in Elizabethton

ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – The Elizabethton Police Department responded to a fatal crash on Thursday night on Highway 19-E at 7:01 p.m. Officials say the two vehicle crash happened in front of the Betsy Towne Shopping Center.

A blue 1988 Chevrolet Blazer collided with a tan 2003 Cadillac Deville in the Southbound lanes of the highway. Due to the severity of the injuries, the Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team responded to investigate the crash.

A preliminary investigation revealed the Chevrolet Blazer, driven by Steven L. McQueen of Elizabethton, was traveling Southbound on US Highway 19-E in the outside lane. The Cadillac Deville, driven by Junior Phillip Waters of Elizabethton, tried to turn left into the entrance of Betsy Towne Shopping Center from the Northbound turn lane of US Highway 19-E.

The Cadillac Deville traveled into the path of the Chevrolet Blazer and was struck on the passenger side. Physical evidence and statements obtained on scene determined the Cadillac Deville had failed to yield right of way to the Chevrolet Blazer.

Waters and McQueen suffered serious injuries during the collision and were transported to Johnson City Medical Center by Carter County EMS.

A passenger in the Cadillac Deville, identified as Elizabeth Delano Waters, 78, died from her injuries.

The investigation is ongoing at this time. Neither alcohol nor drugs were contributing factors in the collision.
