VERNON, Ind. (WHTM) – A Central Pennsylvania man who crashed down an embankment in Indiana stayed with his girlfriend’s body for three days before he was able to crawl back to the road for help, police said.

Indiana State Police said they found 39-year-old Kevin Bell of Dover on Tuesday evening.

Bell lost control of a 1999 Ford Explorer while driving on Route 50 in Jennings County on Saturday. The Ford went off the road and traveled down the embankment before striking a tree head-on, police said.

Investigators said it appears Bell’s girlfriend, 37-year-old Nikki Reed, sustained fatal injuries in the crash and died instantly.

Reed’s family had reported her missing on Sunday. Reed, of Seymour, Indiana, reportedly drove to Pennsylvania to pick up Bell. She was last heard from on Saturday while driving back to Indiana, and Bell’s family told police they hadn’t been able to contact him either since Saturday.

Police said Bell sustained severe leg injuries and wasn’t able to leave the SUV and crawl back to the road until Tuesday. He was transported to St. Vincent-Jennings Hospital in North Vernon for treatment of his injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

The crashed SUV was well off the roadway and not visible from the road, police said.
