JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Mountain Home VA Medical Center will soon unveil a new program aimed at helping more veterans get healthcare faster.
Starting next month, Mountain Home will offer same-day access for mental health services, according to Acting Medical Center Director Daniel Snyder. Snyder says the medical center will do the same for primary care in December.
“I’m excited about the same-day access and what I need our veterans to understand about same-day access is when I say that I mean that we will meet your healthcare need that same day,” Snyder said. “They can come here and be treated special as America’s heroes and they can expect to be treated promptly.”
Snyder says that doesn’t mean veterans will see their doctor on the same-day unless they’re in crisis or have an emergency. Instead, other health professionals will help meet their needs.
The acting director says he attended a meeting last week in Washington, DC where President Barack Obama addressed him and others by video, calling the wait time scandal “transformational” for the future of veteran care.
Snyder says the same-day access programs should help improve wait times. According to the most recent data, Mountain Home VA’s wait times are below the national average almost across-the-board, in every category except for new patients needing primary care.
“What I really like for our veterans to know is one, come see us and we will get you seen right away and two, you’ll get excellent care here, quality care,” Snyder said.
