ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – A man faces charges after Elizabethton Police Department officers said he crashed his car in a park while driving under the influence.
According to an EPD report, police arrested Joshua Atkinson, 28, Tuesday and charged him with DUI, leaving the scene of a collision and resisting arrest.
In the report, officers were called to U.S. Highway 19E near Siam Road in reference to a vehicle that had run off the road, as well as a driver who had left the scene.
Investigators said Atkinson’s car — which had been traveling westbound on Siam Road — crossed U.S. Highway 19E, went over a metal guardrail, down an embankment and then crashed into a concrete barrier in Cat Island Park.
Witnesses told police they saw Atkinson get out of the car and run from the scene.
Police found Atkinson walking near South Main Street. Atkinson was reportedly uncooperative with police and told police he had a pocket knife in his pocket.
When officers went to retrieve the knife, Atkinson pulled away and had to be placed on the ground. Officers said they could smell alcohol on Atkinson, and said he had bloodshot eyes and was unsteady on his feet.
Atkinson told police he ran away because he was scared and wanted to see his mother.
According to the report, Atkinson was uncooperative and resisted officers during the field sobriety tests and officers were unable to complete the tests.
Atkins was scheduled to appear in Sessions Court Nov. 5.
