ERWIN, TN (WJHL) – A sewer line break at the Unicoi County jail forced 62 inmates out of their cells and Wednesday crews are beginning the clean up process.

Crews arrived around 8 a.m. to begin clearing out debris and sludge at the Unicoi County Jail’s downtown Erwin office. The heaviest damage is in a service room on the ground level, sewage, water and insulation litter the floor making the room unrecognizable.

Nick Pappalas from the Allied Piping Company told News Channel 11 that the damage is extensive.

“We’re seeing a lot of deteriorating sanitary piping that’s leaking real bad and water line that’s very much deteriorated and leaking real bad. I’ve seen worse but this is pretty deteriorated,” Pappalas said.

Pappalas said they hope to have the pipe work done within the next two days. The entire project could take up to a week.
