RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 15-year-old Siegel High School student has been expelled after school resource officers found a loaded .22 caliber handgun in his possession.

Six school resource officers were at the school Wednesday afternoon conducting safety drills when a student told them about the other teen’s gun.

“We went right to the student and got the gun without incident,” School Resource Officer Capt. Barry Hendrixson said. “It was handled without any students being injured. We take any report of weapons or drugs on campus seriously. We always investigate immediately to the best of our ability.”

The student was detained and will be expelled under the district’s zero tolerance policy.

Capt. Hendrixson said the teen faces a petition charging him with having a weapon on campus and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said other charges may be pending.

Deputies are conducting an investigation and the student is expected to face criminal charges.

The student has not been identified at this time since he is a minor. He will be taken to the Rutherford County Juvenile Detention Center once the petition is obtained and faces a hearing in juvenile court.
