KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – On Tuesday afternoon a World War II veteran was honored in Kingsport.
Hershel “Woody” Williams, who is the recipient of the Medal of Honor, was treated to lunch at the food city on Eastman Road.
Williams was deployed to Iwo Jima and played a pivotal role in opening the Japanese lines enabling the marines to move forward.
Those actions led to one of the most iconic photos from the war, the American flag being raised on Mount Suribachi.
When talking about his service, Williams said, “There is a great deal of pride and naturally a great deal of satisfaction that you did it honorably and for a purpose. In World War II we had more of a purpose to serve than what we have today.”
The United States Navy honored Williams by naming one of its expeditionary sea base ships the U.S.N.S. Hershel “Woody” Williams in January.
