Kingsport police seek woman behind Facebook money scam

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Police in Kingsport need your help finding a woman who scammed a victim out of a “substantial amount of money”.

According to police, on June 17 the victim reported that she had received a message on Facebook from a woman “masquerading” as her friend, requesting help with obtaining a large amount of money from an online government grant.

The suspect asked the victim to pay, what police are calling, a “substantial delivery fee” in advance via MoneyGram.

The victim, followed the suspect’s instructions – sending the MoneyGram from a Wal-Mart store located on West Stone Drive in Kingsport. Minutes later, the suspect claimed the money at the other Kingsport Wal-mart store located on Fort Henry Drive.

The suspect, an unidentified woman, tried to “extort additional funds out of the victim, alleging the Internal Revenue Service had placed a hold on the money,” said police.
