CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – A local organization is hoping to stop illegal dumping and littering throughout Carter County.

The organization is called Carter County Proud and it’s members have been cleaning up trash and litter throughout the County since March.

“We’re going to be moving forward to try to become an affiliate, for our community to become an affiliate  with Keep America Beautiful,” said Carter County Proud Co-Founder Ed Jordan.

Jordan said so far, many of their efforts have paid off, but there’s still work to do.

“If our community comes together as one identity instead of fractured identities…we can make a lot more progress as one unit,” said Jordan.

Recently, Jordan and other members of Carter County Proud gave their support to another initiative with a similar mission.

“Tim Holdren, one of our county commissioners has opened up a case in regards to trying to clean up the cigarette butts issues,” said Jordan.

Jordan said Holdren suggests fining people who throw cigarette butts on the ground.

They never deteriorate or fall apart or go back into nature,” said Jordan.

“It’s a good initiative. It may be a tough process of actually catching them in the act and everything but it could definitely help create awareness and actually have people understand that cigarette butts are trash,” said Carter County Commissioner Ross Garland.

Garland said the initiative may be challenging. But Garland said he is a witness to what Carter County Proud can accomplish when it comes to reducing illegal dumping and littering.

“It really helps i know with Milligan Highway we’ve adopted that road, Carter County Proud, a two mile section and its been successful so far,” said Garland.

Jordan told News Channel 11, money received from the fines could be used to further their mission, keeping Carter County Proud, and litter free.
