4th annual Race for Wandell draws crowd from across Tri-Cities region

ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL)- Saturday morning people came from around the Tri-Cities to rally around a former Elizabethton elementary school principal battling ALS.

In 2013, doctors diagnosed East Side Elementary School Principal Dr. Josh Wandell with ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

As Dr. Wandell continues his fight, more than 1,000 people participated in the 4th annual Race for Wandell Saturday morning at East Side Elementary School.

Dr. Wandell’s brother, Neil Wandell, said they are so grateful for the community’s ongoing support.

“It’s awesome, I know it just takes his breath away, I know it does us, after the race is over we get so tied up in doing this and that, and when you get a chance to sit back and look at all the people that showed up, we can never be thankful enough, and I know if Josh had something to say he would just be so thankful,” Neil Wandell said.

All proceeds from the event go toward helping pay for Dr. Josh Wandell’s ongoing medical bills.
