JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Every morning at 8:15 a.m. Lake Ridge TV goes on the air.
“We use it to communicate announcements within our school and we use it to build a sense of community. The kids enjoy doing it,” said teacher Maria Labarbera.
A crew of three is assigned to a day of the week. On this day, Campbell Hixon is in at 7:45 to get everything in place and type the script.
“It’s very fun to do all the equipment and get it ready for all the kids,” said Hixon.
Lacy and Addison arrive shortly after to practice.
“I like learning facts every week, I learned that the Andes Mountains are the highest water mountains,” said Addison Still.
“Whenever I was in kindergarten I saw the news on TV. When I was in 4th grade I knew I wanted to be a part of the news,” said Lacy Leita.
Fifty, fouth grade students will take part this year. Their shows will be seen by all 600 students in the school.
“It gives a great sense of community because it’s broadcast through every classroom in the school the children pay very good attention to it because it’s other children talking,” said Principal John Phillips.
And with that combination, the morning news will continue to start the day for years to come at Lake Ridge Elementary.
“It’s such a confidence builder when they get to communicate with 600 students,” said Labarbera.
