BRISTOL, TN (WJHL) – Tuesday morning brought U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. to Vance Middle school in Bristol Tennessee.
This is just one of the stops between Washington D.C. and Louisiana.
It is called the “Opportunity Across America” tour and the purpose of the trip is to celebrate the progress of education throughout communities across the country.
King highlighted President Obama’s ConnectED initiative. He said the purpose of this initiative was to connect America’s students to the digital age through next-generation broadband and high-speed wireless in their schools and libraries.
Secretary King said, “I’m encouraged by what I’m seeing because this is an effort the President has focused on throughout the administration to ensure that’s schools have access to high-speed internet. And also to ensure that schools have access to technology as a tool for learning.”
The Secretary was given a tour of the school and met with various students to see the progress the school has made since the inactive has been implemented.
Students showed king a variety of projects they have been working on and how they use technology and the internet to make learning come to life.
“My favorite part of the day is really just spending time with students hearing about what they love about what they’re learning and seeing students passion. That’s why I became a teacher and the principal was to see that kind of passion and it’s great to see it here at Vance”, said King.
The last stop of the tour will be in Louisiana on Friday.
