Fletcher Ekern’s (Knoxville, Tenn.) golden goal in the 92nd minute for ETSU men’s soccer defeated the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Tuesday night.
After defending throughout the full time, the Bucs took the Tar Heels to overtime after UNC threatened to put the game away late. From first touch IN overtime, UNC maintained most of the possession, but after a clearance by ETSU, the Bucs worked up the field connecting passes and putting pressure on UNC.

Working up the right side, sophomore midfielder Cameron Woodfin (Old Hickory, Tenn.) flicked the ball to Ekern inside the box. With a man on Ekern’s right, he tapped the ball past the recently named ACC Defensive Player of the Week James Pyle. This was Ekern’s first goal of the season and Woodfins’s second assist on the year.
UNC outshot the Bucs 16-8, and goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland (Chester, U.K.) made three terrific saves to keep the game level in full time.
This was the highest ranked team ETSU has ever beaten. The highest ranked team the Bucs have defeated was in 2013 when the Blue and Gold defeated No. 8 UAB in Birmingham, Al.
