Abingdon family, pets safe after house fire thanks to police officer

ABINGDON, VA (WJHL) – A family of four and their pets made it safely out of a burning home this morning in Abingdon thanks to the quick thinking of a police officer.

The Abingdon Police Department says around 5:15 a.m. Officer A.S.Debusk was called to a home on Beechwood Circle to assist with a structure fires.

The officer arrived and found the home in flames.

According to Abingdon police, he spoke with neighbors who indicated there was a possibility that people were still inside the home. He quickly tried to wake the people inside the home by banging on a side window to grab the attention of a woman who was sleeping inside.

The woman woke three others. The four people and four dogs made it out of the home safely through a side window.

According to a release, the cause of the fire is not known at this time. The Abingdon Fire Department is investigating.
