MEMPHIS, TN. (AP) – A west Tennessee sheriff’s deputy has been charged with trying to extortion after trying to extort thousands of dollars from an alleged drug dealer.
The deputy is associated with the Shelby county sheriff’s office.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Memphis said Wednesday that Jeremy Drewery demanded money from a confidential source who had been previously arrested on drug charges.
Prosecutors say Drewery, who was assigned to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Task Force, promised the source exemption from criminal charges in return for “thousands of dollars in cash”.
The U.S. attorney’s office says the source reported the extortion attempt to the FBI, which recorded the payments made to Drewery.
Drewery, of Arlington, has been arrested on an extortion charge and has appeared before a federal court magistrate.
