Water main break causes damage in downtown Kingsport; Commerce Street remains closed

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) –  The city of Kingsport is investigating a water main break on the corner of Commerce and East Market streets, which temporarily flooded in downtown Kingsport Thursday evening.

The eight-inch water main explosion happened just before 6 p.m. Thursday and KPD officers, as well as Kingsport Water and Sewer workers, responded to the scene.

News Channel 11 was on the scene and noticed the water main break caused a substantial amount of sidewalk damage, which included caved in sections of sidewalk along Commerce Street.

Cindy Saadeh’s fine art gallery received some minor water damage, as well as damage to a few of the paintings inside the business.

Saadeh told News Channel 11 that most of the damage from the water main break was on the exterior part of the building and that she was notified of the flooding by a neighbor.

“It was like the flood of 2014 is what I was told, so I just came down and saw the water bubbling up out of the side walk competely bubbled up, it was crazy,” Saadeh said.

Commerce Street, in between East Market and Center streets, remains closed while crews continue to clean up mud and debris in the road. Drivers should still take alternate routes to avoid the area.

KPD officials are still investigating the cause of the water main break.
