Elizabethton community hosts appreciation lunch for local first responders

CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Local first responders were invited to the VFW Post #2166 Saturday afternoon as a way to say thank you.

Commander of the Post, Duane Gilbert, said they wanted to honor those who put their lives on the line every day.

“Its a real honor to show our appreciation for those that protect and take care of us,” Gilbert said.

Local police, fire, and EMS workers were invited to have lunch and listen to a live band play by the river.

Deputy Chief Rusty Barnett with the Elizabethton Fire Department said they were grateful for those who organized the event.

“Sometimes you just feel like do people really care but they really do, and in times like this you really have the outpouring of support and we are really excited to be here,” Barnett said.

Senator Rusty Crowe and Representative John Holsclaw were on hand to give local first responders American Flags that had flown over the State Capitol.
