RICHMOND, VA (WJHL) — Virginia State Police are warning people of an on-going phone scam.
Police say the caller claims they are from the Internal Revenue Service, then they demand payment by verbally threatening and intimidating the person on the other end.
Also, the caller ID number used by the scammer shows up as a legitimate Virginia State Police phone number with an (804) area code.
Police say the scammer usually has your personal information, but they can obtain the information by doing an internet search.
If you receive one of these calls, hang up. Police say if you do owe taxes to the IRS, do not share any information with the caller, but call the Internal Revenue Service to confirm.
If you know that you do not over taxes, you can report the scam call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
You can also file a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant; choose “Other” and then “Imposter Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.
