Uber rides are now available in the Tri-Cities

TRI-CITIES, TN (WJHL)- A new service is underway in the Tri-Cities tonight that could simplify your travel plans. The driving company known as Uber has made its way to our region and members of the News Channel 11 staff were among the first to take advantage of the newly expanded car service.uber

Uber is a driving service that boasts hundreds of drivers in different countries across the globe. As of noon on Friday, you can now use Uber to get around the Tri-Cities region. You can download their app on your phone or visit their website online at http://uber.com to make a car reservation for yourself.

If you are a first time user of Uber, you actually get your first ride for free, but there are a few stipulations. You must enter a promo code which can be found on Uber’s website (we used the code: “FEELING 22”) to get that first ride for free. Secondly, the trip must be $22 or less to qualify as free—anything over that amount will be charged to your credit card.

uber3We requested our Uber and were notified on our phone when he had arrived.  We were, retired army veteran, Kenneth Ganoe’s first passengers. Ganoe said so far the experience is going wonderfully.

“I’m retired … I just needed something to keep me from watching too much TV,” he said.uber2

Ganoe added that being able to set his own hours and make money in his spare time was what attracted him to this opportunity.  If you’re looking to make some extra cash, you can sign up to be a driver on Uber’s website.

According to Uber’s website, here’s how trip pricing is calculated:

  • Most trip fares are calculated by adding base fare, time and distance rates. Fares can vary based on the type of vehicle you drive and the city you drive in. Please note that uberPOOL fares may be calculated differently.
  • Riders are charged a minimum fare for trips with a brief duration of time or a short route distance. This helps ensure you are fairly compensated. Minimum fares are determined by your vehicle type and city.
  • Cancellation fees are included in the Trip Fares segment of your Payment Statement. The Uber Fee is applied to cancellation fees.

Uber’s website also warns passengers that fares may surge when many riders are requesting pickup in a certain area of a city, especially during certain in demand hours. Overall, our News Channel 11 ‘Uber experience’ was a success as we made it back to the station in one piece and were able to use Uber for the first time in Johnson City.
