ATLANTA, GA (WSPA) – Lun Lun the giant panda is pregnant, according to Zoo Atlanta’s veterinary team.
The zoo released an ultrasound showing the tiny .78 centimeter fetus. The team says that hormone analyses and Lun Lun’s behavior suggest that a bitch could take place within three weeks.
Beginning on Monday, teams will begin monitoring Lun Lun 24 hours a day.
While they are optimistic, the zoo cautions that it is not uncommon for giant panda’s to reabsorb the fetus and for the pregnancy to fail. They also say that due to the difficulty obtaining ultrasounds, they aren’t certain that there is not more than one fetus.
Lun Lun was artificially inseminated on March 28. The cub would be the sixth for 18-year-old Lun Lun and 18-year-old Yang Yang. Lun Lun also gave birth to the only twin giant pandas in the US, Mei Lun and Mei Huan.
Zoo Atlanta has a PandaCam that allows anyone to watch the pandas 24/7.
