University of Tennessee, SEC limiting types of bags fans can bring to games

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee is limiting the types of bags that fans can bring into athletic venues during the upcoming school year.

School officials announced Monday that each person is permitted to bring only one clear plastic bag no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches – or a one-gallon clear resealable plastic storage bag. Fans also may bring a small clutch purse not to exceed 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches.

Fans are permitted to bring cushions or seats that don’t have arms or pockets.

The Southeastern Conference has mandated the new rules to take effect for the 2017 academic year, but UT has joined several other SEC universities (including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Texas A&M) in implanting changes for the 2016 season.

All items, including clear bags and clutch purses, are subject to search at the gates.

Tennessee is one of several Southeastern Conference schools implementing these rules. Tennessee assistant athletic director for event management David Elliott said it’s similar to the NFL’s bag policy.
