AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Pets Alive! has taken in a young dog, Wentworth, who has severe burns on his entire back.

Wentworth arrived Tuesday to begin treatment and recuperation.

“When we see an injury like this, we have to assume it was deliberate,” said Dr. Ellen Jefferson, Executive Director of APA!. “Someone poured a caustic substance on the dog or left him in the sun, causing this terrible burn.”

Wentworth will go straight to the APA! medical clinic where he will be evaluated and a treatment plan prepared. This may include antibiotics, pain medications and long-term rehabilitation including hydrotherapy, the shelter said.

“Although Wentworth is likely in a lot of pain, he seems to be in good spirits,” said Jefferson. “This is a positive indicator that he can recover completely.”

APA! has a page set up for donations to help offset the costs of the dog’s treatment.

The shelter is also looking for a foster home with no other pets or small children, so that Wentworth has a quiet place to recover.
