Doctor: Keeping normal routine can help ease impact of graphic images

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The graphic images you have been seeing recently, like the shooting in Baton Rouge, could impact your mental health.

News 2 spoke with a forensic psychologist and assistant professor at Vanderbilt University who says feeling scared is a normal response, and to remember that these incidents are rare.

She also talked about how you should maintain your daily routine to regain a sense of normalcy in your life.

“They shouldn’t radically change how they live life day-to-day unless they are doing things that are unsafe,” said Dr. Kimberly Brown.

“Keeping a normal routine keeps people feeling like the world is a stable place and that things will continue to be okay for them, especially for children. Parents should continue to have normal routines for children,” she added.

Brown went on to say children can be particularly vulnerable to these violent images, so it’s really important to monitor what kids are seeing.
