KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Two people died in a car crash on Interstate-40 westbound early Wednesday morning,
Crews responded to a head-on crash involving an eighteen-wheeler and a SUV near Interstate-287 N around 1:04 a.m. The truck collided with the SUV traveling west in the eastbound lane. The Estes trucking company truck carried 860 pounds of Benzoquinone, a hazardous chemical used for paint and dyeing.
The crash caused a fire. Currently, the Haz Mat unit is letting the fire burn to avoid hazardous water run-off. Crews are monitoring air for safety. Also, crews are using a water-soluble foam to smother the fire, which a cleanup company will take it away.
The roadway is closed for westbound and eastbound traffic. Crews are asking drivers to avoid the area.
