LEBANON, VA (WJHL) – A 21-year-old pleaded guilty child pornography charges and was sentenced in Russell County Circuit Court Tuesday.
According to a news release from the Office of the Russell County Commonwealth’s Attorney, Ronald Dewayne Mickles pleaded guilty to soliciting child pornography from a child less that 15 years of age.
Mickles was sentenced to 10 years, with five years suspended, as well as three years probation upon his release.
At Tuesday’s hearing, evidence was presented that revealed that Mickles had been talking to a 13-year-old on Facebook and through text messages.
According to the release, between June and August 2015, Mickles sent and received sexually explicit messages to the 13-year-old.
The messages were reportedly discovered by the victim’s family.
“The term ‘sexting’ is unfortunately becoming commonplace in our vocabulary and we are seeing a sharp increase in the criminal cases that involve sexting,” Commonwealth’s Attorney Brian Patton said. “This sentence should serve as a strong reminder to teenagers to refrain from engaging in this type activity and to parents to be even more vigilant monitoring teenagers’ wireless devices and social networking sites.”
The case was investigated by the Russell County Sheriff’s Office.
