NEW YORK — Tennessee junior tight end Ethan Wolf has been named to the John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List, as announced Wednesday by The Friends of John Mackey. Presented since 2000, the John Mackey Award recognizes the most outstanding collegiate tight end.

Wolf appeared in all 13 games for the Vols last season, earning 12 starts at tight end. He finished the year with 23 catches for 301 yards — fourth-most on the team. He logged a reception in the first 11 games of 2015 and opened the season with one of the best games of his young career when he hauled in two receiving touchdowns in a 59-30 win over Bowling Green. That performance made him the first UT tight end to score two touchdowns in a game since Luke Stocker found the end zone twice against Western Kentucky in 2009.

Wolf also had a team-high four receptions for 55 yards at Florida and three receptions for 56 yards — including a career-long 34-yard catch to key the game-winning scoring drive — in Tennessee’s comeback win over No. 19 Georgia. Those performances landed him on the 2015 John Mackey Award Midseason Watch List after six games.

In 2014, the Minster, Ohio, native became the first true freshman tight end to start a season opener in Tennessee history. He saw action in 12 games overall with 11 total starts, making 23 catches for 212 yards.

Prior to Wolf, the last Vol to appear on the Mackey Award Watch List was current Oakland Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera in 2012. Both Stocker (2010) and Jason Witten (2002) were named semifinalists for the John Mackey Award during their times on Rocky Top.

The recipient of the John Mackey Award is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2016 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 7, 2016 and then presented live on December 8, 2016 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. All future announcements can be found at johnmackeyaward.com.
