Bristol, Va. swears in new council members, elects mayor, vice-mayor

Bristol, VA (WJHL) – A new era in Bristol, Virginia city government got underway Friday.

Newly elected Doug Fleenor and Kevin Mumpower took their oaths of office, then took their seats on the City Council.
The new council then elected Bill Hartley to the post of Mayor, and Jim Steele as Vice-Mayor, both by unanimous votes.

While it is a new board, it is still facing past issues, namely, the Falls Development. The council says they are looking forward to a positive future for the Exit 5 development.

“The Falls is a major issue, it has been for a few years,” said Hartley, “we need to keep that going, in the last year we’ve had the opening of Cabela’s and Lowe’s, and they’re working on some additional stores up there now, we just need to keep that momentum going and keep that project moving forward.”

“We’ve just got to make sure that we can continue to do the right thing and continue to develop the property properly,” said Mumpower, “so that the financial flow of tax revenue that the city needs to support that are there.”

The council also voted to keep Tabitha Crowder as City Manager, Pete Curcio as City Attorney, and Pam Venable as City Clerk.
