Johnson City church group safely returns after West Virginia flooding

A mission group with Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City was caught up in floodwaters in West Virginia Thursday.

JOHNSON CITY (WJHL) – A Tri-Cities church group that went on a mission trip to West Virginia is back at home safe.

Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City was in Greenbrier County when Thursday night’s flooding began.

The group says it rushed to safety after the rain began to fall, and floods swept through the place they were staying.

Some of their personal items were damaged.

No one was hurt, but the group decided to drive back Friday night.

Youth Minister Billy Crawford said, “We were actually sitting down eating lunch when the water started coming in to our service area and it just started pouring in. There was lots of panic, and we all reacted quickly and everybody rallied together to save what we could. But it was a little frightening.”

The group returned home just before 9 p.m. Friday.
