KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) – Kingsport authorities closed the old arched bridge that spans South Fork Holston River near Fort Patrick Henry Dam Thursday to rescue a man who was found on one of the support arches.

Kingsport Fire Department spokesman Barry Brickey said Hammonds Bridge was closed to traffic while firefighters worked to reach the man and bring him safely back to the road above.

It was unclear why the man was under the bridge; however,Tom Patton, Kingsport Police Department’s public information officer, later reported the person underneath the bridge was believed to be intoxicated, and added that police, fire and EMS crews were called to the scene to assist the man.

The call about the man under the bridge came in around 11 a.m. Hammonds Bridge was still closed as of 2 p.m., which is around the same time that firefighters pulled him up to the road.
