SMYTH COUNTY, VA (WJHL) – News Channel 11 confirmed a plant in Southwest Virginia will be closing and will result in more than 80 job cuts.
Declining sales in the coal business are being blamed for the closure of Kennametal in Smyth County.
Director of Economic Development Lori Deel said despite their best efforts to work with the company, their Chilhowie plant will close.
The closure will mean the moss of 89 jobs.
Deel said they have not set a time table for the closure, but said the Virginia Rapid Response Team will be working to help those employees find jobs in the region.
