Moe’s Original Bar B Que opens in Hamilton Place

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL-TV) – A new barbecue restaurant opened this morning in Johnson City to large crowds.

Moe’s Original Bar B Que in Hamilton Place opened its doors at 11 am with people already standing in line to get in. There are two locations in Asheville, NC, but this is the first location in the Tri-Cities, but it might not be the last.

“We looked at many locations and we decided on Johnson City. We love the area, it’s a beautiful town. We saw a need and we’re bringing our Alabama style barbecue here.”, explains Bridgett Murphee from Moe’s, “We are hoping to be in all the cities, this is our test market and if it works out great, we hope to be in Kingsport and Bristol.”

Moe’s serves pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked turkey breasts, wings, St. Louis style ribs, hand breaded catfish, blackened mahi, sandwiches, and several side items with a white BBQ sauce that is served with poultry and an “Alabama” red style served with pork. The smoke their own meat every day, which means when it runs out, it runs out for the day.

“We focus on the meat, we don’t have 20 different sauces. We have two, we have a white and a red. We focus on the flavor of the meat.”, says Murphree. “We smoke with white oak and apple or cherry wood. It keeps a light smoke so you can actually taste the meat. We smoke fresh every day, so when it runs out, it runs out.”

The build up for the new eatery must have worked, as there were several people already in line to get in before the doors even opened. Murphree says everyone with the restaurant was excited to finally open the doors to the public, “We finally made it, we’ve been doing our build up for about four months, so we’ve been working toward this really hard. We’re really honored to be here and blessed there was a line at the door before we got here.”
