ROGERSVILLE, TN (WJHL) – A Rogersville man was charged with vandalism after the sheriff’s office was told of an oil spill in front of his home.

A Hawkins County deputy was called to the home of Barnabus Neil Helton, 37, 204 Hidden Valley Road, Rogersville, Tuesday because there was “a large and costly effort to clean up” 10 gallons of hydraulic fluid that Helton was accused of pouring onto the road.

The spill was apparently an effort to control speeders in his neighborhood, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Helton also put a sign in his front yard that said “Slow down or I will kill you,” according to the report.

The cost of the clean up was estimated to be between $5,000 and $10,000.
