JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A federal ruling allowing same-sex couples to adopt children in Mississippi remains in place after the state failed to file an appeal on the case.
Back in March, a U.S. District Judge ordered the Department of Human Services to stop enforcing a ban on same-sex adoption.
He said the ban was unconstitutional after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage and benefits for gay couples.
The lawyer who represented the four couples who sued the state said state officials had until midnight Monday, May 2, 2016, to file an appeal.
