Special Olympics athletes win medals, make memories

Johnson City, TN (WJHL) – The pomp and circumstance preceded a day full of winning medals and making memories at the ETSU Mountain States Health Alliance Athletic Center Friday.

First responders and their families from Washington, Carter, Unicoi, and Johnson Counties toted the torch 1.6 miles from the Johnson City Police Department to the Tennessee Area 3 Special Olympics Track and Field games.

All the athletes recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the Special Olympics Oath, then ETSU football coach Carl Torbush officially opened the games.

Over 450 athletes took part in events from wheelchair races to sprints to softball toss.
