CARTER COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – After burning for a week, a wildfire in Carter County is 100% contained. The Railroad Grade Wildfire located off Highway 25/70 at White Rocks Mountain – that’s about five air miles southeast of Hampton, TN. Officials say the fire burned about 1,750 acres.
This weekend, firefighters secured containment lines on the northern perimeter of the fire, while mopping up and patrolling any hot spots.
Authorities tell News Channel 11 that rehabilitation and hazard- tree removal were performed on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in order to make conditions safe for hikers.
The Tennessee Division of Forestry says 60 people have worked countless hours to contain this wildfire.
Officials are asking people in the area to remain vigilant as potential threats may still exist on the trail.
Firefighters will continue to monitor and perform mop-up operations as it becomes necessary and begin suppression rehabilitation – meaning rehabilitating woodland impacted by suppression efforts to its natural state.
