Tennessee naming street on campus after Joan Cronan

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Former Tennessee women’s athletic director Joan Cronan now has a street on campus named in her honor.

Tennessee officials announced Wednesday that the street serving as the entrance to the Cronan Volleyball Center, Sherri Parker Lee Stadium softball complex and Regal Soccer Stadium will be named Joan Cronan Way. The new street signs already were up when a dedication ceremony took place before the Tennessee softball team’s Wednesday night game with Furman.

“It’s kind of an entrance for women’s sports, so to have that, I’m really honored and humbled and excited,” Cronan said. “It’s pretty cool, and I love the new sign. It’s awesome.”

Cronan was the Tennessee women’s athletic director from 1983-2012. She also filled in as the school’s overall interim athletic director in 2011 before Dave Hart took over on a permanent basis. Cronan was president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2008-09 and was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Tennessee already had named its volleyball practice and training facility after Cronan. The Cronan Volleyball Center was dedicated October 2014.
