Long-time vice mayor, Richard Watterson, honored in Kingsport

KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL-TV) – It was a special night at the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting Tuesday night.

The board honored former alderman and vice mayor Richard Watterson at the beginning of the meeting. Watterson graduated from Douglass High School in Kingsport and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 – 46. After he came home, he graduated from college and was first elected to the Kingsport Board of Mayor and Alderman in 1973. He served for 24 years and was Vice Mayor of Kingsport from 1981 – 1995.

Watterson, who turns 90 in May, says it was a lot of fun to come back to Kingsport and attend the BMA meeting, “It’s been enjoyable, coming and meeting with these guys, some I haven’t seen since I left here and that was in 1997.”

A proclamation was read at the meeting that proclaims Wednesday, April 6, 2016 as “Richard Watterson Day” in Kingsport.
