Fire officials plan burnout for Sciota Road fire

UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL)- Crews are expected to begin work Sunday afternoon on a burnout operation on the Sciota Road fire.

Public Information Officer Deborah Walker said favorable winds and temperatures will help fire fighters while they burn areas between the containment lines and fire edge.

Walker said the burnout will add another 150 acres to the Sciota Road fire.

Officials said once the burnout begins, residents in the Whispering Pines and Marbleton communities, and those along Unicoi Drive and Sciota Road will briefly see a smoke column.

As of Sunday afternoon the fire was estimated at 168 acres and containment remained at 75 percent.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but believe its human-caused.

So far the cost of this fire has reached $245,000.
