JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) – Both lanes are open near the Boones Creek and Gray exits along Interstate 26 in Johnson City.
Earlier today, both directions of traffic near exit 13 and 17 were closed so that crews could remove a tractor-trailer that overturned along the interstate. The westbound lanes reopened just before 12:30 p.m. Drivers traveling to Johnson City from Kingsport were redirected off the interstate by Johnson City Police at the Boones Creek Gray exits.
The crash happened early this morning in the eastbound lanes.
According to Washington County, TN EMA director Nes Levotch, the driver of the tanker was not seriously injured and the accident appears to be weather related.
Authorities told News Channel 11 this portion of the interstate will remain closed until 11:00 am or even noon. The overturned tanker truck was carrying 80,000 lbs. or 9,000 gallons of fuel.
Thankfully, no fuel was spilled in this crash and no other vehicles were involved.
Around 8:00 a.m. truck arrived to offload fuel from the tanker.
Viewers reported traffic moving very slowly on Highway 36 due to the detour from the crash on the interstate and the construction work.
