Rain aids in reducing intensity of Greene, Unicoi Co. wildfires

GREENE/UNICOI COUNTIES, TN (WJHL)- It’s full steam ahead for fire crews that are continuing to battle wildfires in both Greene and Unicoi Counties Friday. Officials in both counties are telling us that the rain we’ve had overnight Thursday and into Friday morning has helped in reducing the intensity of the fires.

Andy Gaston with the U.S. Forest Service tells us that the fire in Greene County is around 40% contained at this time with nearly 90 acres still burning.

U.S. Forest Service official Deborah Walker tells us that Unicoi County’s wildfire, which spans over 180 acres, is now 70% contained at this time.

Fire crews in both locations will continue working on contingency lines Friday and expect their efforts to continue into the next few days.
