HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Hawkins County investigators charged a man with child abuse and neglect after the child was found nearly two miles from home playing in a creek.

On March 23, a farmer found the 5-year-old child walking in a creek near Tipton Lane and Carters Valley Road in only his underwear and a t-shirt.

The child’s mother said she had gone to the store and left the child with his father, John Paul Doty, 35.

Doty told police he fell asleep and that’s when the child wandered off.

When investigators went to the home, they found several marijuana pipes and cut straws.

Doty was arrested and charged with child abuse, neglect and possession of drug paraphernalia.
