Unicoi Co. Sheriff’s Office issues warning for romance scams on popular dating website

UNICOI COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – The Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office said a new scam is targeting people on a popular dating website.

Deputies are calling them “romance scams” and said scammers are creating fake accounts on the site Plenty of Fish, claiming they are soldiers deployed on active duty.

They are reportedly asking victims to send care packages to them that include money and phones.

The sheriff’s office said women have even sent scammers thousands of dollars.

Deputies are warning people not to fall for it.

According to deputies, the packages are being sent to Nigeria.
