Students taken to hospital following Greene Co. bus crash

Six students went to the hospital following a school bus crash in Greene County on Thursday morning.

According to Greene County Director of Schools David McLain, students from South Greene High School were taking a county bus to the Greene Technology Center when a head-on collision occurred just after 8 a.m.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol report identified the driver of the vehicle that struck the bus as Bridget Oliver, of Afton. She was charged with due care and financial responsibility.

The THP report said Oliver was traveling south on Highway 70, also known as Asheville Highway, when her vehicle crossed the center line and collided with the school bus.

Five children on the bus were taken to Tacoma Regional Hospital by EMS. Two other students and Oliver went to Laughlin Memorial Hospital’s emergency room.

Injuries to the children were not immediately known, but McLain said injuries were thought to be minor.

THP said 25 students were on the bus.

McLain said the bus driver avoided steering the bus over a 25-foot drop off on the side of the road.

“I just want to commend our driver,” he said. “She’s experienced and loves these kids.”
